Judge Sam Calandra-A True Vincentian

- Thursday, August 04, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce that Judge Sam Calandra died on Tuesday afternoon, August 2, 2011 after a brief illness. He leaves his loving wife, Marie, and a great legacy of public service in Cleveland and of volunteer service to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, both locally and nationally where he was a true Vincentian.

Judge Sam had been a member of St. Rocco SVDP Conference since the 1960's. Over the years he was president of the parish SVDP, the Cleveland District Council, and the Diocesan Council. At the National SVDP, he was honorary chair of the Building Committee which located a new National Office in the early 1990's and the Resolutions Chair for many years. He contributed his talents of being a great listener to bring people from different sides together, along with being a great storyteller and having a great sense of humor.

Judge Sam was instrumental in the restructuring of the SVDP in the Diocese of Cleveland since 2009. SVDP memories will include the Quarterly Communion Breakfasts and Board Meetings at St. Rocco. Judge Sam was a true Vincentian!

Please check the Cleveland Plain Dealer for details for his wake on Friday afternoon and evening, and his Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday morning at St. Rocco Church, 3205 Fulton Road, Cleveland, OH 44109. Ripepi and Sons Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
